''While most thieves prefer to form gangs and act under the cover of darkness, grifters see no reason to trade the laws of society for the laws of a guild. Preying upon the gullible with a combination of personal magnetism and persuasion, the grifter's art is rarely noticed.''

== Character Creation ==
The Grifter background has many similarities to the [[Drifter]]'s:  you are rootless, a new arrival in [[Teron]], with no organization or authorities telling you what to do (or helping you out, either).  The main difference is that a well-known (sort of!) fellow grifter is in town - and he's ''such'' a positive influence on you ...

Also like the Drifter, the Grifter begins Act I with nonexistent Faction [[Reputation]] and utterly [[Guildless]], but for a trickster who contemplates turning over a new leaf and getting a ''job'' (*gasp*), there may be some comfortable overlap with the institutional arms of the [[Merchant]] or [[Thief]] professions ...
